7 Things to Check Before You Buy a Cordless Vacuum (Most People Skip #4)

Most people compare two things: the price and the suction number. But the things that decide whether you'll actually use your vacuum — and whether it lasts — are hiding in the details.

The vacuum you'll actually use is the one you can grab with one hand.

Here's something nobody puts on the box: most people don't vacuum once a week anymore. They vacuum in bursts. Cereal at breakfast. Whatever the dog dragged in after school. A quick pass before bed so tomorrow starts clean.

That changes what "a good vacuum" means. A machine with huge suction is useless if it's too heavy to grab, makes your hand ache after ten minutes, or dies in a year because the battery can't be replaced.

We've sold more than 20,000 of our own cordless vacuums, and the same questions come up again and again. So we turned them into a simple checklist you can use on any cordless vacuum — ours or anyone else's.

The best vacuum isn't the most powerful one. It's the one you'll actually reach for.
1

Light enough to carry upstairs one-handed

Aim for about 5 lbs or less
Lifting a lightweight cordless vacuum with one hand

Weight is the number one reason a vacuum ends up living in the closet. If it takes two hands and a deep breath to haul it up the stairs, you'll put it off — and the crumbs win.

Heavier machines also get worse as the day goes on. Reaching under the couch, lifting it to the ceiling corners, carrying it room to room — every extra pound adds up.

Quick testLook for the total weight with the wand and floor head attached, not just the handheld part. Many listings only show the lighter number.
2

A power button that stays on

No squeezing a trigger the whole time
Guiding a running cordless vacuum with relaxed fingertips

Some cordless vacuums only run while you hold a trigger down. That sounds minor until you've cleaned the whole downstairs and your hand is cramping.

It's one of the most common complaints we hear — especially from anyone with arthritis, wrist pain, or small hands.

Quick testCheck whether it says "push button" or "power button" rather than "trigger." You want to press once and just glide.
3

It stands up on its own

The question customers ask us most

The phone rings. A kid yells. Someone's at the door. You let go of the vacuum — and with a lot of stick vacuums, it clatters to the floor or has to be leaned against a wall where it slides down.

A free-standing vacuum just… stands there until you're back. It also means you don't have to drill a wall mount into your house to store it.

Quick testLook for "free-standing" or "self-standing." If the only storage option is a wall mount, it probably can't stand on its own.

A battery you can swap out

This decides if you're buying for 1 year or 5
Holding a detachable vacuum battery pack

Every rechargeable battery slowly loses capacity — your phone, your laptop, and every cordless vacuum on the market. That's just how lithium batteries work.

So the real question isn't if the battery will wear down someday. It's what happens when it does.

Quick testAsk two questions: does the battery come out without tools, and does the brand actually sell replacement packs? If either answer is no, factor that into the price.

A brush roll that doesn't wrap hair

Especially with pets or long hair in the house
Hair-wrapped brush roll compared with a clean anti-tangle brush

If you've ever sat on the floor cutting hair off a brush roll with scissors, you know. Once hair wraps around the roller, suction on carpet drops and the vacuum starts pushing debris around instead of picking it up.

Quick testLook for an "anti-tangle" brush roll. A V-shaped bristle pattern helps guide hair toward the suction opening instead of letting it wind around the roller.
6

Headlights on the floor head

You can't clean what you can't see
LED headlights revealing dust on a dark floor

This sounds like a gimmick until you try it. Low LED lights on the floor head throw light across the floor at an angle, and suddenly you can see the fine dust, crumbs, and pet hair hiding under the table and along the baseboards.

It's weirdly satisfying — and it means fewer "I just vacuumed this" moments.

Quick testThe lights should be on the floor head itself, low to the ground. That's what makes hidden dust pop.
7

Converts to a handheld

One machine for floors, stairs, couch and car
Using a cordless vacuum as a handheld in a car

Pull the wand off and you've got a handheld for stair treads, couch cushions, the car seat, and that strip of crumbs between the stove and the counter. No second gadget to buy, charge, and find space for.

Quick testCheck that it comes with a crevice tool and a brush attachment in the box — not as extras you buy later.
💡

Bonus: read runtime claims carefully. For every cordless vacuum, the longest runtime on the box is measured on the lowest power setting. Max power runs shorter. That's normal — just compare like with like, and look for an on-screen battery display so you're never guessing.

● Why we're writing this

We built the Kolnar S3P to check every box on this list.

Full transparency: we make vacuums. When we designed the S3P, we started with the complaints people kept telling us about — heavy machines, cramped hands, vacuums that topple over, and batteries that turn the whole thing into e-waste. Then we built a $129.99 vacuum that answers all seven.

Questions people ask us most

Does it really stand up on its own?
Yes. The S3P is free-standing — you can let go of it mid-clean and it stays upright. No wall mount required.
Do I have to hold a trigger the whole time?
No. Press the power button once and it stays on until you press it again.
How long does the battery last?
Up to 55 minutes per charge on the lowest power setting. Higher power settings run shorter, which is true of every cordless vacuum. The LED display shows exactly how much charge you have left.
What happens when the battery wears out someday?
The battery is detachable, so you replace the battery — not the vacuum. Replacement packs are sold on our store.
Is it good with pet hair?
The anti-tangle V-brush is designed to keep hair from wrapping the roller, and it works on hard floors, rugs and low-pile carpet.
What's in the box?
The S3P, the motorized LED floor head, a crevice tool, a soft brush, the detachable battery, a washable HEPA filter and the charger.
What's your return policy?
We have a 30-day return window. You can read the full details in our return policy.
